5 Things I've Learnt After Marrying Hundreds of Couples

If there's one thing I've learnt after standing beside hundreds of couples on one of the biggest days of their lives, it's this…

The things people worry about before their wedding are rarely the things they remember afterwards.

It's never the perfectly folded napkins or whether Uncle Bob wore the right tie.

It's the moments.

The laughter.

The happy tears.

The hugs.

The stories.

So, if you're planning your wedding, here are five things I've learnt that I hope make the journey feel just a little easier.

1. Guests remember great ceremonies.

I know the reception gets a lot of attention. The food, the drinks, the dance floor…

But ask anyone what they remember most from a wedding and they'll often talk about the ceremony.

Not because it was long or formal. Because it made them feel something. They remember the story about how you met. They remember the unexpected laugh. They remember watching your parents' faces as you said your vows. They remember the look you gave each other when you were finally announced as newlyweds.

Your ceremony isn't just the bit before the party.

It's the reason everyone came.

2. Nobody regrets making their ceremony personal.

Sometimes couples worry about sharing too much.

"What if it's a bit cheesy?"

"What if people get bored?"

Can I let you in on a little secret? They won't.

When your ceremony sounds like you, your guests lean in.

They smile because they recognise your personalities.

They laugh because they've heard those stories before.

They tear up because they're reminded why they love you both.

The most memorable ceremonies are never the ones filled with fancy words.

They're the ones filled with real ones.

3. Nervous couples relax within minutes.

Nearly every couple says the same thing to me before the ceremony starts.

"I'm so nervous." And honestly? That's completely normal.

You're about to stand in front of the people you love most and promise forever.

But here's what happens almost every single time.

Within the first few minutes, everyone settles.

You hear a laugh.

You catch your partner's eye.

You take a breath.

The nerves melt away and you stop thinking about everyone watching.

It suddenly feels like it's just the two of you.

That's one of my favourite moments to witness.

4. Family stories are often everyone's favourite part.

Some of the biggest laughs in a ceremony come from the simplest stories.

A childhood memory. A funny first date. The family tradition everyone knows.

The little quirks that make you you. Those stories don't just entertain your guests.

They remind everyone why your relationship matters.

Your grandparents smile. Your siblings nod. Your best friends laugh before the punchline even arrives.

Those moments create connection, and that's what a wedding ceremony is really all about.

5. Rain never ruins a wedding.

If I had a dollar for every time a couple worried about rain.

Here's the truth.

I've seen ceremonies moved indoors at the last minute.

I've seen umbrellas appear out of nowhere.

I've seen guests huddle together laughing while the weather did its thing.

And I've never once seen rain ruin a wedding.

In fact, some of the most beautiful, emotional and joy-filled weddings I've ever been part of happened on rainy days. The weather becomes part of the story.

Years later, it's often one of the things couples laugh about the most.

At the end of the day…

When the flowers have wilted.

When the cake has been eaten.

When the dress is packed away.

The thing you'll remember most is how your wedding made you feel.

If your ceremony is full of warmth, laughter, genuine stories and the people who matter most, you've already created something unforgettable.

Everything else is just the icing on the cake.
